

It is a 3-day event held in the Knoxville Expo Center on Clinton Highway just off I-. Sat, Close Date: Sat, This event has already taken place. For several years it partnered with the Dogwood Arts Festival, and TVA's West Tower in downtown Knoxville became the show venue. The event is comprised of a mix of handmade crafts and commercial products. The following year, after much evaluation, discussion, and soul-searching, members moved the Smoky Mountain show to Knoxville.

One might say that 10 years of preparation went into this show! Judy Elwood, that first show chairman in 1981 was President of the National Quilting Association in 1990. The invitational show format was chosen because SMQ members were absorbed in planning the production of the 21st Annual National Quilting Association Quilt Show in Knoxville. The quilt show was well received and became an anticipated event at the museum through 1990, when an invitational show featured previous ribbon winners from earlier competitions. Categories included bed quilts, wall quilts, crib quilts, pillows and cathedral window items. The first show featured 169 entries and eighteen antique quilts for display. None of them had previous show experience!

Judy Elwood, the first SMQ show chairman, and three other enthusiastic members, Suzanne Haase, Janice Sanders, and Glenys Nappo, were extremely instrumental in planning this event. The inaugural SMQ quilt show was held in 1981 at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Smoky Mountain Quilters was founded in 1980 as a chapter of the Tennessee Valley Quilters' Association. She has been a member of Smoky Mountain Quilters of Tennessee since 1986. In 2009, she was inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame for her work as a quilt historian and author. Her books include: Quilts of Tennessee, Soft Covers for Hard Times, Patchwork Souvenirs of the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, and Southern Quilts of the Civil War. Merikay Waldvogel is a nationally known quilt collector, researcher and writer. There is no additional charge for this event. At these special features of our show since their inception in 2008, Merikay Waldvogel surprises us with a group of antique quilts, many of which have never been shown publicly before.Īlong with a team of quilt history colleagues (Becky Harriss, Cindy Stuart and Jan Wass), Merikay will date the quilts based on the quilts’ fabrics, patterns and styles.
